First art journal for Eastern Cape

artjournalTHE Eastern Cape's first academic journal on the arts was launched at the Ann Bryant Art Gallery in East London on Friday, 9 November.

Known as Inyathi, the journal seeks to promote different kinds of art and artists, and to encourage artists to start writing about art. The launch on Friday evening was attended by the provincial MEC for finance - and art lover - Billy Nell; and the artists who contributed to the first publication. An inyathi is a buffalo.

nelThe Hon. Minister of Finance, Mr. Billy Nel, unveiled Amitabh's Art Exhibition at the Ann Bryant Art Gallery, East London, on the 23 November 2006. He also opened the first batch of Hudson View followed by wine and supper.

claudi_hilesIT'S an exhibition with a difference at the East London Ann Bryant Art Gallery.

The Anything but Painting exhibit opened at the East London gallery on 24 May, and will run for two weeks. The official opening was attended by the MEC for finance, Billy Nel. The exhibition invites artists working in different media to showcase their works to local art lovers.

"We have artists from Mdantsane doing work with wood, and then we have ceramics, poetry and other forms of art – as long as it's not painting," explained Amitabh Mitra, chairman of the East London Art Society.

earthworks001SOME of the best local and international artwork is on show at the East London Ann Bryant Art Gallery.

The two exhibitions that opened on Thursday May 25 should have East London art lovers making frequent visits to the gallery. In the Coach House, the East London Art Society's Anything but Painting exhibition brings together some of the city's top artists.

Gallery Curator Leon du Preez says the "theme of the exhibition encourages young artists to try and extend their boundaries in the creative process of making artworks".
